The book is "Shyness: What it is, What to do About it", by Philip Zimbardo, which, oddly, I was reading around the time of the video (but didn't spot it here back then). Zimbardo famously placed Stanford University students (as "guards") in charge of others ("prisoners") The "guards" became SO sadistic, and the "prisoners" SO passive, that the experiment had to be curtailed. Later, Zimbardo testified in defence of an Abu Gharib warden, based on what he concluded in the Stanford experiment.
