The students of a private engineering college today ransacked
the college premises in demand of better faculty, study materials
& placement services. The students demolished the laboratories,
computers, classrooms, cash & administrative sections of
Bengal Engineering College. The conflict between the students
& the college administrators started about a week back. The
angry students also demonstrated before the principal's office
& even blocked the principal at his office night-long. Police
had to intervene & officials had to be posted at the college
premises. The sub-divisional officer of Durgapur, Osman Gani
called for a high-level meeting at his chamber today to find out a
solution of the conflict. Although the administrative heads &
the college authorities were present for the meeting, the students
restrained from appearing for the same. Their representatives
demanded that the meeting should be conducted at the college
premises infront of all students.
While the meeting was on process, the students started the
ransacking the premises for over one hour before the police took
control of the situation. Twenty eight students has been arrested
from the college. The S.D.O., Durgapur informed, "we wanted
the conflict to be solved & called for a meeting for working
out a solution." The chairman of the college, S. K. Sharma
said, "what the students did today is not expected in an
academic institution. The students may have any demand or
agitation but violence is not a way to solve it." He also
demanded that, the loss will accumulate well over Rs. 33 lakhs.
The district police super, Niraj Kumar Singh informed
bardhaman.com, "a team of our personnel & officers have
taken control of the situation. The boys' hostel of the college
has been vacated while lady officers have been deputed at the
girls' hostel. The girls' hospital will be vacated tomorrow
morning." He however confirmed that 22 students have been
identified & arrested for the incidence.
