Three revelers were drowned in to the Damodar river this afternoon. They were enjoying polo in the riverbed and went to collect the ball that fell in to the deep-water pocket of the river. They were residents of Raniganj town. Hundreds of locals gathered in the riverbank when the Mejia Police and the Raniganj fire brigade officials recovered the bodies of the deceased.
The youths Anup Singha (20), Srikanta Joshi (19) and Surendra Singh (20), according to the locals were enjoying polo like everyday. The area falls under the Mejia PS area, Bankura considering the midstream of the river as the inter-district boundary. They were drowned one after another when they were trying to rescue Anup who suddenly slipped down the water pocket at about 2pm today. The riverbed remains dry during the summer in this part of its course every year. But it has scattered water pockets those are used by the local fishermen for fishing.
The local fishermen and a section of sand lifters made several attempts to rescue the drowned youths but failed. Soon after the incident the Bankura police and administration sought cooperation of the Durgapur civil defense administration-seeking divers to help searching out the bodies. The fire brigade officials from Raniganj finally recovered the bodies.
