Sumitra Bag (20), a housewife of Hajaratpur, Birbhum was allegedly killed for dowry. So does her father, Kartick Mondal informed today at the morgue of Burdwan Medical College & Hospital. "We married her off two years back with Niramoy Bag. We gave Rs. 55,000 in cash, gold ring etc. as dowry. I being a poor farmer, couldn't meet up their demand of `gifting' a palank (divan). We requested them not to torture her due to this & we will try to meet up their demand as soon as possible."

Some members of the Hajaratpur panchayet informed them about the death of Sumitra on Saturday night. On visit to the house, they suspected the death to an abnormal one & lodged a complaint with the Kankratala P.S. Poilce had recovered the body and sent it to the BMCH morgue for post-mortem. The deceased father also complained that police have not so far arrested Nirmal Bag, the husband, as he is an active member of the ruling party. However, the police officials confirmed that, "Nirmal is absconding; so we couldn't arrest him".
