Burdwan,
26 Apr.
04:
Biswanath Roy, the Trinamool Congress candidate at the
Khandagosh Assembly constituency today lodged a complaint against
the O.C. of the Khandagosh police station. According to Roy,
Nazrul Islam, the concerned police officer have picked up Nayan
Malik, a strong TMC supported on 24.04.04 & physically
tortured him before presenting at the Burdwan court with imaginary
charges today. The TMC leader also complained that, Islam has been
deliberately harassing the TMC workers at "utmost pressure of
the ruling CPI(M) party." The by-election at this assembly
constituency will be held along with the Loksava elections.
The concerned officer was not available for his comment on the
subject. Even his cellular phone is `switched off'. R. K.
Chakraborty, the duty officer of Khandagosh P.S. declined to know
anything about the incidence & the whereabouts of the
concerned officer. SP Burdwan, K. C. Meena said, "we have
received the complaint. We will conduct an enquiry against all the
charges."
Shyamal Dutta, the election agent of Biswanath Roy said, "the
local CPI(M) workers & leaders are threatening our party
workers to restrain from election preparations. Some of them are
even threatened to be killed. The concerned O.C. backed up by the
ruling party is trying to terrorise our workers. Nayan Malik was
called at the PS & was arrested. Later today he was produced
to the Burdwan court after been tortured physically."
The local CPI(M) leaders strongly denied any such association with
the officer or the alleged threatening of TMC workers by them.
They also informed the arrest was made after a complaint made by
Malik's wife.
