Burdwan, 24 Aug 04 :
The Burdwan - Katwa road was blocked
for nearly five hours by agitated villagers today morning. The villagers also planted paddy at the road declaring its condition to be `worse than agricultural fields'.  The entire 60 kms stretch of road is full of pot-holes. The road, being the main connector between the two sub divisions, is busy with both passengers as well as goods vehicles. Death of a local youth Munsi Sajahan (40) by a speeding truck at the road yesterday led the villagers to block the road second time in a month. The villagers demanded immediate repair of the road to avoid further accidents.

A month back local villagers blocked the road to draw attention of the administration, but nothing changed after assurance made by the administrational heads. Today Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, Subal Chandra Roy along with large contingent rushed to the spot and was forced to declare that work of construction will be started from tomorrow. He said that," I have requested the PWD Dept to take this matter seriously and they have assured me that from tomorrow the work will be started."

The road is in worst condition for last one year. The road is used by over 120 passenger buses connecting Burdwan with the neighbouring Birbhum, Nadia & Murshidabad districts.
