Burdwan, 14 Sep 04 :
The Burdwan district bar association today raised their voice against the BMCH authorities accusing them of negligence in the treatment of B. N. Baidya, the district judge resulting to his death. Baidya was referred at the hospital's cardiac department by a leading physician of the city. Baidya complained of severe chest pain at around 10.30 am on 7th Sep. at his chamber & was rushed to a leading cardiac specialist of the city. The doctor conducted an ECG & referred him to the hospital's cardiac department diagnosing a heart attack. The judge was admitted at the ICCU of the hospital under the supervision of Dr. Ranjan Sen Sharma. The family of the judge & the lawyers complained that Dr. Sen Sharma didn't pay attention on the ECG report & treated him for gastric problems.

The vice-president of the district bar association, Biswajit Das complained, "the specialist, Dr. Sen Sharma was not present at the hospital that night while he was supposed to be on-duty." "When the condition of the judge worsened, the specialist was summoned to find that he was absent. Another doctor was called & inspite of all his efforts the judge expired." added he. Dr. D. P. Koner, who attended the judge at his ultimate hours, later informed, the judge had experienced an heart attack twice in the meantime. The bar association officials informed that, a letter of complain will be sent to the state chief minister, health minister, law minister & the chief justice of the high court requesting a judicial probe on the matter.

Meanwhile, the hospital authority have initiated a departmental enquiry. A four member team led by Dr. Udayan Ganguly has been assigned to conduct the enquiry. Although the enquiry is yet to finish, sources informed that, Dr. Sen Sharma was found guilty for not conducting a second ECG on the judge. His absence at the hospital during his duty hours was also established before the enquiry committee as informed by unofficial sources. A call book was sent to the doctor several time but couldn't be traced out to attend the ailing patient. The super of the hospital, Dr. Sarit Choudhury when contacted confirmed the departmental probe but refused to comment on its findings. "We are yet to receive a report from the committee & cannot comment before we receive it" informed Dr. Choudhury.
