The
administration has started assessing the extent of damage.
The hailstorm started at about 4 pm yesterday and continued till
one hour. Most of the villagers were in the agricultural fields
when hails started dropping down. Most of the livestock, goats and
sheep, hens and duck roaming outside of the residential houses in
Bhedia and Ramnagar panchayat areas had to succumb to the
catastrophe. The DM, Mr Subrata Gupta said, ‘we have started
preliminary work to expedite relief operation in those affected
areas. Senior officials have been asked to table the assessment
report at the earliest.’ According to the district officials,
the cattle and other domestic animal were the worst sufferer of
the calamity.
The administration recorded casualty of cattle at 63 numbers and
goats & sheep at 269 numbers. Hens and duck casualty rose up
to 2920, the district administration officials reported. Mr AK
Padhi, district Principal agricultural Officer said that potato
cultivation of 175 acres, rice of 250 acres and mastered
cultivated on 40 acres were fully damaged. There was no human
casualty however. The Burdwan Savadhipati, Mr Udai Sarkar
after visiting to the areas expressed that the farmers worst hit
due to the catastrophe will be taken under consideration to ensure
prompt relief and concession.
