Burdwan, 07 Sep, 04:
Burdwan Medical College & Hospital hits the headline again. This time the hospital authorities have allegedly issued death certificate to a patient who had expired at his residence after a fortnight since released from the hospital. According to the hospital's documents, Jariful Haque (87) was admitted at 12.50pm on 23.07.04 at I.C.C.U of the hospital. He was released at 4.15pm on 26.07.04. Within fifteen minutes he was re-admitted at the new-building of the hospital, where he was treated & subsequently released at 8.45am on 10.08.04. The deputy super, M. Murshed had signed at the release certificate of the patient, who also happens to be the father-in-law of Dr. Murshed. Being the relative of the deputy super, Haque was treated free of cost at the hospital.

Later, he expired at his residence at 10.35 am on 26.08.04 following a "cardio-vascular failure". The deputy super incidentally misused the position hold by him by issuing a death certificate at the hospital's pad. Hospital sources declare this certification system to be "totally illegal" as the certificate was issued to a patient who didn't expire at the hospital and the same has been issued at the hospital pad & not at the government prescribed form. Based upon this death certificate the body of Haque was cremated.

When bardhaman.com asked Dr. Murshed about this he pleaded, "please don't drag a person who has expired." "I have to issue such certificates regularly" added the deputy super. He also assured this correspondent that he will issue such certificate `in case of need' if we restrain from bringing this incident to the limelight. The super cum vice-principal of BMCH, Dr. Sarit Choudhury informed, "I don't know about this & hearing it first from you. I cannot comment on this before I look into it." However the principal of the medical college, Dr. Bijoy Mukherjee directly labeled this to be an offense. "If such incident took place, it is an offence as anyone can't issue a death certificate on behalf of the hospital for a patient who haven't expired at the hospital." He also mentioned that even in case of death at the hospital, the certificate should be issued only on prescribed format & not in any other paper including the pad of the hospital.
