Burdwan & Durgapur, 5 Aug 04 :
Two branches of
nationalised banks at Burdwan & Durgapur have made to the
headlines for two separate incidences. Three Tamil speaking
persons were caught by the employees of Canara bank while trying
to snatch away four lakh rupees from the branch. The trio entered
the Burdwan branch of the bank as soon as it opened & one of
them started a confrontation with the cashier over a draft. The
remaining two started removing bundles of note from his desk in
the meantime. However Mrinmoy Kanti Dutta, a peon of the bank
noticed the fact & managed to catch hold of one of the
miscreants. The bank officials & local people chased the flee
two thugs & caught them. The police have arrested all of them.
The city police is in desperate search of Tamil speaking person to
help them in interrogating the miscreants. The Addl. Superintendent
of police, Shibshankar Dutta interrogated the three.
At a separate incidence, The UCO bank authority in Benachitty area in Durgapur town has lodged a complaint of cheating against it’s two agents, Fatik Ghosh and Pradip Banerjee who allegedly have eaten Rs.
8 lakhs from the depositors of B-Zone area in the steel township. The retired steel employees and the small businessmen including some shop employees had deposited the sum under ‘Laghu Bachat Yojna’; a daily deposit scheme termed for 63 months. The branch manager,
P. K. Pattanayak, said, "depositors have been complaining for quite some time that the sum handed over to the agents were not appearing in their respective pass books. We were suspicious and the agents too failed to satisfy our quarries. So we lodged police complaint against
them." The accused agents however could not be arrested till this evening.
