Burdwan: A patient waiting two months for treatment at BMCH.

Sarthak Ghosh, a mid aged villager from Kaligram, Burdwan has been a victim of the negligence of doctors at the Burdwan Medical College & Hospital. He was admitted at the city hospital on 10.02.04 when a tractor ran over his left leg. He was referred by the BMCH to "any hospital in Kolkata" for plastic surgery. He was refused admission from the SSKM & Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital due to unavailability of "bed/ floor bed" in between 24.03.04 & 30.03.04.

He being a daily labour (the local gram panchayet issued a certificate on 11.02.03 stating his family income to be within Rs. 8,000 annually) couldn't bear up with both the cost & harassment he faced at the govt. hospitals at Kolkata, was readmitted at the BMCH on 31.03.04.

Till then he is lying idle at a floor bed at the hospital. "Inspite of my application to the Super of the hospital, I'm yet to receive a proper treatment. I fear this doesn't lead to amputation of my leg & subsequent permanent disability" said the ailing patient.

The hospital super admitted the incident is due to negligence on part of the doctors. He said, "the main problem lies with the fact the hospital doesn't have a in-house plastic surgeon. Earlier some orthopedic & general surgeon used to operate on such patients. They have refused to do so as the patients are not ready to accept the risk factors involved with the operation." He also added, "everything was working fine untill a local leader made a chaos with a patient operated by orthopedic surgeon in a similar case. The doctor was assaulted by the leader & his followers. Since then, no doctor is ready to operate on such cases."

However the super promised to look into the matter personally `on receipt of an application from the patient's family stating they will accept any consequences of the operation'.
