Burdwan, 04 Sep 04 :
When patients at the Burdwan Medical College &
Hospital is facing scarcity of blood at the
hospital's blood bank, many units of blood are
been destroyed every month by the bank
authorities. Sources reveled that, more than 194
units of blood have been destroyed at the L.C.F.
ward of the hospital between February & July
this year. Even when the blood bank ran out of
stock during the months of May & June, 58
& 28 units of blood have been destroyed at
these two months respectively. A document signed
by Chaitali Jash of L.C.F. ward on 23rd Aug
confirms the existence of 27 units bloods which
have been expired due to non-usage in proper time. |

A
high level official of the hospital informed,
"Although the doctors are demanding for blood for
their patients, they usually don't wait for it to arrive
& administered. This results the bloods are not been
transfused to the patients & are kept aloof until
the doctor reappears after a couple of days. In the
meantime, the blood often expire as the wards are not
equipped to store it properly." The official, not
willing to disclose his identity also informed,
"the duty nurses at the wards have conveyed this
information to the doctors repeatedly & have
requested them to send requisition to the blood bank
& allow to procure the blood units when they are
physically present at the wards. The doctors have
declined this proposal for reasons unknown."
This results in wastage of valuable & life saving
blood units every month. Although different
organisations, clubs & NGOs are organising blood
donation camps on a regular basis to meet the growing
demand of the district hospital, several units are been
destroyed due to lack of co-ordination & will of the
hospital management & officials. When asked, the
vice-principal of the medical college & super of the
hospital, Sarit Kumar Chowdhury said to bardhaman.com,
"The waste of blood was a practice of the past but
steps has been taken to eradicate it. Still I will
enquire about it." The Dy. Super of the hospital,
M. Mursed straightly decline and said, "I don''t
know any incidence of blood wastage. Such things doesn't
here." The principal of the medical college, Bijoy
Mukherjee couldn't believe such incidence but later
explained that blood can be wasted for `several reasons'
and have assured to `look into it'.
The blood bank officials have sent report of used as
well as wasted blood units to the hospital authority
every month. The reports revels that, in most of the
cases the blood units wasted, couldn't be used due to
expiry of it for non-usage within scheduled time. When
this district hospital is in need of blood & stocks
run out in most of the days of the month, such waste due
to negligence have astonished most of the hospital
staffs & officials also. On 31st
May this year, Jamir Mirza, a thalesemia affected
youth of Raina area committed suicide after hearing the
news of scarcity of blood at the blood bank of the
district hospital. Jamir's uncle, Samser Ali Mirja
confirmed that the youth was depressed when he heard
that the much necessary blood is not available at the
blood bank & this led the higher secondary appeared
student to commit suicide.
Another house-wife of the Bhatar area was found to HIV
positive after she was transfused with blood from the
blood bank. The lady was transfused with infected blood
inspite of all necessary testing is mandatory as per
government norms. In the month of June, an indoor
patient died due to lack of blood. This led to organisation
of blood donation by several clubs & social service
organisations to maintain a steady supply of blood at
the blood bank.
It seems that, all efforts & noble gestures of
different clubs & social welfare organisations are
going to waste just due to negligence & lack of will
of the blood bank & hospital authorities. It seems
much effort is needed from the hospital authorities for
proper usage of the much needed lifeline instead of
wasting it for their whimsicalness. |
