Burdwan, 1 June 04 :
The national human-rights commission have initiated a probe against two sub-inspector of the district police for physically torturing a congress worker for the last five months. The two sub-inspectors, Debjoyti Saha & Abu Selim were in charge of the Ketugram police station. The police have detained a local congress leader, Jagai Ghosh on charges of murder of Baneswar Ghosh, a CPI(M) leader of Sujapur. Although Jajia's name was not among the 47 persons named in the FIR, he was tortured for five months by the police. His vision as well as left hand has been suffering due to the torture. Inspite of all these, his name didn't appear at the charge-sheet submitted by the police. The All India Legal Aid Forum visited the village last week & collected information on the incidence.

The superintendent of the district police, K. C. Meena informed, "we have asked report from both the officer-in-charge. We are also enquiring in the matter why he was detained without any specific complaint."

The MLA of Katwa, Rabindranath Chatterjee said, "the national human-rights commission have initiated a probe in the matter based on the report sent by the legal aid forum. We have also received information that two lawyers of the supreme court will visit the area soon."
