Burdwan, 1 June 04 :
The national human-rights commission have initiated a probe
against two sub-inspector of the district police for physically
torturing a congress worker for the last five months. The two
sub-inspectors, Debjoyti Saha & Abu Selim were in charge of
the Ketugram police station. The police have detained a local
congress leader, Jagai Ghosh on charges of murder of Baneswar
Ghosh, a CPI(M) leader of Sujapur. Although Jajia's name was not
among the 47 persons named in the FIR, he was tortured for five
months by the police. His vision as well as left hand has been
suffering due to the torture. Inspite of all these, his name
didn't appear at the charge-sheet submitted by the police. The All
India Legal Aid Forum visited the village last week &
collected information on the incidence.
The superintendent of the district police, K. C. Meena informed,
"we have asked report from both the officer-in-charge. We are
also enquiring in the matter why he was detained without any
specific complaint."
The MLA of Katwa, Rabindranath Chatterjee said, "the national
human-rights commission have initiated a probe in the matter based
on the report sent by the legal aid forum. We have also received
information that two lawyers of the supreme court will visit the
area soon."
