Burdwan, 1 June 04 :
A thalesemia affected youth have committed suicide for
depression. Jamir Mirja (20) of Shankarpur village, Raina P.S.
consumed pesticide yesterday & was rushed to Burdwan Medical
College & Hospital in serious condition. He died at the
hospital last night. The uncle of the deceased, Samser Ali Mirja
informed, "Jamir committed suicide due to depression as we
were informed by the district blood bank the unavailability of
blood. Jamir & his brother both being thalesemia patients
requires regular blood transfusion. We were informed by the blood
bank officials that there is a scarcity of blood due to the
election."
The hospital authorities however described this scarcity as a
natural phenomenon due to the scorching summer & not due to
the election as described by the deceased's relatives.
"During the summer number of blood donation camps minimise
resulting in the decreased supply" the blood bank officials
informed.
