The police arrested all the five members of a family from Vaishnav Bandh area under Hirapur PS in Asansol this afternoon. They were accused of killing a 40 days old girl child. The corpse of the baby was recovered from the safety tank of a quarter of the IISCO where the family used to reside. 

The police said that Mahadeb Karmakar, a wage earner and his wife Kabita also a maidservant made a chaotic scene in the area early this morning alleging that someone had kidnapped their 40 day old baby from the outhouse of the IISCO quarter they used to reside in. The locals were confused with the allegation and led a haunt for the baby. The matter was informed to the local police too. Later during interrogation, the couple admitted that they themselves had strangled the baby last night. The motive behind the murder however was quite embarrassing. 

The couple told the police and the locals who gathered the place that they were poor and already had a daughter. They did not want another daughter. So they had decided to kill her. The locals roughed up the couple in presence of the policemen. The police later rescued them and hospitalised. The couple and the parents and a brother of Mahadeb also were arrested on charges of indulging in the crime. The incident sparked sensation in the area.
