STUDENTS BLOCK NH2 AT ASANSOL FOLLOWING DEATH OF A STUDENT

The students of a private engineering college blocked the Asansol road today for three hours following death of a second year student. The student was crushed under a lorry. The vehicle of the state small industry minister was diverted following the resentment. 

Souradip Roy (24), the second year student of Mech. engineering was approaching towards the college riding on a scooter of one Ashoke Sheth, a resident of local Sen-Releigh colony. At about 11.30 am they were approaching the ESI hospital crossing in the town. The road has got a number of potholes and the scooter fell on a ditch and was dis balanced. The lorry that was just behind the scooter hit the scooter from behind. Souradip died on spot. Injured Sheth was rushed to the hospital. The students by and large erupted in protest and organised the roadblock. The Asansol SDO, Chandan Chayan Guha immediately rushed to the place and made several attempts to convince the agitating students. The students blocked the National Highway-2 junction and the town junction ends braving the huge downpour.

The engineering students alleged that dilapidated road condition has caused the accident and invited death of their classmate. The SDO said, repair work for the stretch has been ordered and the concerned contractor will be assigned soon. The state small industry minister, Bansogopal Chowdhury was approaching towards the Asansol circuit house for a higher administrative meting. Following the resentment his vehicle was diverted. The minister told bardhaman.com, "the SDO has been asked to look after the grievances and take necessary measure." Only on last Saturday the Trinamul Congress had led a demonstration alleging state apathy regarding repair work of the 21-km G. T. Road stretch in Asansol. The party led by Moloy Ghatak, the MLA and party district chairman had arranged a mass paddy sapling plantation on the road.
